| Before Kool G Rap, New York didn't really have the street rap that could hold its own against what artists such as L.A.'s Ice-T and N.W.A were churning out. Sure, Run-D.M.C. could get tough, and in the mid-to-late '80s a new generation of rappers, led by Rakim, was beginning to explore this territory. G Rap, though, excelled at the street narrative, a style that would come to define later Queens MCs like Nas (who was hugely influenced by G Rap on his early records) and Mobb Deep. G Rap was also known for his voice: a distinctive, menacing slur that conveyed world-weariness as much as it did impending terror. Paired with DJ Polo, G Rap's first album, Road to the Riches, was a product of its time: compared to G Rap's later work, it's almost a lighthearted affair. The title track brimmed with jook-joint piano, and "Truly Yours" hinged on a spry horn loop later used by Nas. For the most part, G Rap focused on the intricaies of rhyming, and it was only on his second album with Polo, Wanted: Dead or Alive, that his storytelling skill truly came to the fore. There was the requisite politically conscious track ("Erase Racism") bumping up against one of hip-hop's erotic classics ("Talk Like Sex"), as well as a cautionary tale to young hustlers in the making ("Rikers Island"). But Wanted's masterpiece is "Streets of New York," a vivid look inside the misery of the hood: "Upstairs, I cover my ears and tears/The man downstairs must've drank too many beers/Because every day of his life, he beats his wife/ 'Til one night, he decides to pull a butcher knife" (a line chillingly revisited a decade later by New York indie-rap pioneers Company Flow on the domestic-violence tale "Last Good Sleep"). Their third album, Live and Let Die, continued G Rap's reign as rap music's premier yarn-spinner, thanks to morose classics like the title track and "Ill Street Blues." As a solo artist, G Rap never achieved the same heights as he did on these albums, not because of the absence of DJ Polo, but because younger artists such Notorious B.I.G., Nas, and Ghostface Killah took his street-narrative style to new heights of sophistication. The man himself wasn't able to change with the music, but his template remains. http://mog.com/music/Kool_G._Rap/songs >> nekoi traki4ki.. | |
